OKLAHOMA CITY –The Senate Business and Commerce Committee has given its approval to a measure to help increase access to affordable housing. House Bill 2724, by Sen. Julia Kirt, D-Oklahoma City, and Rep. Meloyde Blancett, D-Tulsa, would create the Oklahoma Affordable Housing Commission to oversee the planning, coordination, and strategy to address the state’s ongoing housing shortage – a shortage Kirt said is impacting every county in the state.

Currently, the voucher tax credit can be redirected to cover outstanding debts to the state. If a parent chooses to send a child to private school and receives the voucher but owes back taxes, child support, or a debt from a state school, the tax credit will be applied to reduce the debt.
