State Senator George Young, D-Oklahoma City, released the following statement after the House Bill 4190 failed 23-18 in the Senate Tuesday.
“House Bill 4190 was voted down in a very close vote yesterday. This measure would have simply given full time state employees to choose one personal holiday from Good Friday, Juneteenth, Statehood Day, Indigenous Peoples Day or their birthday. This short list makes the cost to the state a non-issue.
“I found it strange that this body, the Senate, would not support giving that latitude to those who make it possible for the state to operate. The inclusion of Juneteenth and Indigenous Peoples Day gives me pause as to whether these dates caused some members of our body to vote ‘no’ on this measure.
“I voted yes on this legislation and am disappointed of the missed opportunity to show our constituents and fellow state employees that we appreciate them and give them the choice of self-expression.”
