Weaver Secures Unanimous Senate Approval for Oklahoma Elder Exploitation and Abuse Act

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senator Darrell Weaver, R-Moore, received unanimous Senate approval for House Bill 1566 Monday, which creates the Oklahoma Elder Exploitation and Abuse Act.

The measure, known as Neil’s Law, establishes a civil action for incapacitated and vulnerable adults, allowing them to pursue claims against individuals who have abused, neglected, or exploited them. The claims may be brought by the vulnerable adult, or on their behalf by a designee, in any district court within a county in which the adult lives or lived at the time of the act.

“This measure ensures those who exploit, neglect, or abuse elderly or disabled Oklahomans are held accountable, but most importantly, it extends additional legal protections to our most vulnerable populations,” Weaver said. “This is a critical protection for those who are often unable to protect themselves, and I look forward to seeing this important bill become law.”

Rep. Collin Duel, R-Guthrie, is the House author of the bill.

“This bill is about protecting our elderly and the most vulnerable among us, sending a clear message that their abuse, neglect or exploitation will not be tolerated. I’m grateful to Senator Weaver for securing passage of this bill in the Senate and am hopeful it is quickly signed into law,” Duel said.

The measure now heads to the governor’s desk for final consideration. Upon being signed into law, House Bill 1566 will take effect Nov. 1.
