Senator Taylor Comments on GOP Decision to Block TIS Repeal

Statement by Senator Stratton Taylor, President Pro Tempore:

"Criminals across the state should be drinking a toast to the Republican lawmakers who voted to block the repeal of truth-in-sentencing."

"I thought we had a common sense compromise on a very important and divisive issue, one that would offer Oklahoma the best of both worlds. It locked up the bad guys for a very long time and repealed a flawed truth-in-sentencing law that no one was happy with."

"The Republican negotiators agreed to the compromise Thursday night, but when they had a chance to keep their word when it counted, all of the GOP members except longtime, respected Senator Jerry Smith decided to play partisan politics and block the repeal effort. Those Republican lawmakers would rather score a few petty political points, even if it means sticking Oklahoma with a law that they say coddles criminals and endangers innocent citizens."
