Statement from Senate Democratic Leader Kay Floyd on Special Session

Senate Democratic Leader Kay Floyd, D-Oklahoma City, issued the following statement on Friday:

“The Senate Democratic Caucus has been reviewing Governor Kevin Stitt’s health emergency declaration and call to special session for Monday, April 6. This will be our first official activity in the Senate Chamber since the Capitol was closed following the positive test of a staffer on March 17th. 

“While we realize special procedures are being developed to limit how many members are on the floor for debates and votes, safety for our constituents, members and staff remains a concern. It is something that weighs on our hearts as we prepare for the work ahead.  Also, some members may need to adhere to the Safer at Home order issued by the governor.

“But ultimately, we realize these concerns must also be balanced with our responsibilities as members of the Senate to the people of Oklahoma. We will fulfill those responsibilities in considering the health emergency declaration, in responding to the shortfall for the current budget year, and in the near future, determining how best to address the pandemic’s impact on the Fiscal Year 2021 budget.  We are committed to working with our Republican colleagues and Governor Stitt as we guide our state through these unprecedented times.

“Our entire caucus also wants to extend our deepest thanks to all of Oklahoma’s medical providers and first responders for their dedication and professionalism in spite of the personal risk during this pandemic.”
