Standridge Commends New Operation SAFE Sweep in Norman, Asks Stitt for Continued Sweeps

NORMAN — Sen. Lisa Standridge today issued the following comments on yet another Operation SAFE sweep of an illegal encampment along Reed Avenue near downtown Norman as state and local officials continue working to address the ongoing public safety concerns surrounding this property.

Standridge, R-Norman, said the priority must remain a firm commitment to public safety while the state-owned property is cleared and kept free from future illegal encampments.

“I requested the first sweep, this sweep and I respectfully ask Governor Stitt for continued Operation SAFE sweeps in Norman because we cannot allow this property to remain an illegal encampment,” Standridge said. “Sweeps are necessary to protect the public and ensure that Norman residents are not forced to live with the consequences of this illegal encampment in their community.”

Standridge emphasized that clearing the property is only part of the solution. She stressed that maintaining public safety requires continued enforcement and accountability. In a July meeting that Standridge organized, Cleveland County officials, state officials, Representative Jonathan Wilk and Sheriff Darrell Weaver discussed options for protecting the public.

"Continued sweeps were a part of the conversation as well as other solutions that will soon be implemented,” Standridge said.

“Public safety has to come first,” she added. “The people of Norman deserve safe neighborhoods, safe businesses and safe public spaces. We must be committed to enforcing the law and keeping this property clear. Our community does a wonderful job of providing paths to better circumstances for those who want it. Unfortunately, many refuse that help.”

Standridge thanked Governor Stitt and state and local law enforcement officials for their continued attention to the Reed Avenue property. She added that she remains committed to working with officials to ensure the area stays safe.

The governor first directed the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to clean up the Reed Avenue encampment through Operation SAFE (Swift Action for Families Everywhere) back in May.
