Senator Thompson Calls Proposed Norman Homeless Encampment Ordinance Absurdly Bad Policy for Residents, Economic Growth

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Kristen Thompson, R-Edmond, today expressed concerns about a proposed Norman ordinance that would allow property owners to obtain permits for homeless encampments on private property, warning that the policy would discourage investment and undermine public confidence in one of Oklahoma's most important economic and educational centers.

“As a proud University of Oklahoma graduate and someone who deeply cares about the future of Norman, I am disappointed that city leaders are even considering a policy that would permit homeless encampments in residential neighborhoods,” Senator Thompson said. “Norman is home to our state's premiere research university, a thriving business community and Oklahomans who have chosen to raise a family in this city. This proposal sends the wrong message to residents, employers, developers and visitors alike.

“As the chair of the Senate Economic Development Committee, I know firsthand that communities across the country compete every day for jobs, investment, tourism and economic growth. Policies perceived as accommodating homeless encampments can have long-term consequences for a city's image and economic prospects.

“I hope logical minds come to the table during tomorrow’s meeting and immediately disregard this ridiculous proposal.”
