OKLAHOMA CITY— Senator Brenda Stanley, R-Midwest City, issued the following statement in remembrance of former State Senator James Howell of Midwest City, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 91.
“James Howell honorably represented Senate District 42 for 16 years from 1970 to 1986. As I now hold the seat he served in for many years, I am reminded that I would not be here without his mentorship and guidance. He encouraged me to run for this office and remained a true friend and supporter throughout the eight years I’ve had the privilege of representing SD 42.
“Senator Howell left a lasting mark on Midwest City through his lifelong commitment to education and public service. His service to our community included teaching and coaching, and continued as a city judge and longtime attorney for Mid-Del Public Schools. Later in his career, he also served on the Mid-Del School Board and as a Regent for Rose State College, following his instrumental role in its transition to state college status. The impact of his service continues to benefit Midwest City and generations of students today.
“We are deeply grateful for Howell’s life and legacy of service, which is felt far beyond Eastern Oklahoma County. He dedicated 12 years of service as Chair of the Senate Education Committee, during which he championed support for gifted and talented students, created Oklahoma’s Rainy Day Fund, and advanced a broad range of education policies that continue to benefit Oklahoma students and will for generations to come.
“Senator Howell represented our community and state with integrity and a deep commitment to improving the lives of others. As a fellow educator in Midwest City, I have long valued his example of service, leadership, and dedication to students. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. I extend my deepest condolences during this time of loss.”
