The Department of Defense recently recognized state Sen. Frank Simpson for his work on two bills this past session supporting Oklahoma veterans. Simpson said he was honored by the recognition and proud to support his fellow veterans.
“It is an honor to be recognized for our work on behalf of active military members and our veterans. I could not have done it without the help of my assistant Glenda Colbert. She and I have worked hard over the past five years to help meet the needs of our veterans and military families,” said Simpson, R-Springer.
Simpson was the principal author of Senate 195, which goes into effect November 1, 2015, providing statutory provisions and guidelines for employers to voluntarily establish veteran preferential hiring programs. The Equal Employment Commission allows states to establish veteran preference programs providing the state has established statutory guidelines.
He also served as the Senate author of House Bill 1331 enabling school districts to identify children of military parents. During a parent’s deployment, children often experience lowered performance and depression. The new law, which is currently in effect, will enable schools to identify those children and work to better meet their special needs.
“As a retired Navy man, I know firsthand the challenges families face during the deployment of a parent,” said Simpson. “Children often suffer silently and as a result their performance in school suffers. Hopefully we can now identify those children and provide the assistance and support they need.”
