OKLAHOMA CITY— Senator Roger Thompson, R-Okemah, was recently appointed to serve on the National Conference of State Legislature’s Education Committee. Thompson was chosen to serve earlier this month by Senate Pro Tem Brian Bingman.
Sen. Thompson was elected to serve in District 8 of the Oklahoma State Senate in November, 2014, which includes Okmulgee and McIntosh counties, as well as parts of Okfuskee and Muskogee counties. In addition to serving on the Senate Appropriations committee, he also currently sits on the Business and Commerce, Education, and Judiciary committees. He is also the Vice-Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government and Transportation.
Thompson is President of the News Leader Company, Inc., which owns and publishes the Okemah News Leaders and the Tri-County Herald newspapers. He and his wife also own Pamela’s Flowers and Okemah Office Supply. In addition to his work as a realtor with Carl Alls Real Estate, Thompson is also currently serving as the President of the Okemah Community Improvement Association.
“It’s an honor to be appointed to the NCSL Education Committee,” said Thompson. “It’s an incredible opportunity to serve with such an outstanding group of leaders in an area as important as education.”
The NCSL Education Committee is one of eight standing committees that educates Congress and federal agencies about state concerns and serves as a forum for state legislators and legislative staff to learn about and share information regarding programs and initiatives in other states. The NCSL Education Committee has jurisdiction over P-20 education issues, including early childhood education, K-12 reform efforts, higher education, the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the Higher Education Act, school violence, special education, teachers, school finance and adequacy.
