OKLAHOMA CITY -State Senator Angela Monson has been unanimously elected to serve as the next vice-president of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Monson was
chosen for the post during this week's meeting of the NCSL in Chicago.
Senator Monson's election marks the first time a black woman will serve as NCSL vice-president, and the first time an Oklahoma legislator has been tapped for the post. It also means that Senator Monson will automatically become President of NCSL in two years.
"This is a tremendous honor and an fantastic opportunity, not just for myself, but for the entire state. As Oklahoma nears its centennial, we have a chance to bring national and international attention to the many exciting and positive events unfolding in the Sooner State," said Senator Monson, D-OKC.
The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization that includes legislatures and staff from all fifty U.S. states, territories and commonwealths. The organization helps provide information on a wide variety of issues and events impacting states as well as helping ensure that state legislatures have a strong voice in the federal system.
"Through NCSL, state legislators can share information about critical issues such as education, health care, public safety and more. We can find out what is working in other states, as well as showcasing our innovations and successes," explained Senator Monson.
Senator Monson will assume the office of President of the NCSL during the 2002 annual meeting in San Francisco.
