Sen. Kyle D. Loveless (R-Oklahoma City) Tuesday released the following statement commemorating the 224th anniversary of the adoption of the Bill of Rights:
“The Bill of Rights lays the foundation of our government and guarantees certain rights to our citizens. Of these are our religious liberty, the right to bear arms, and the right to be secure in one’s life, liberty and property.
Unfortunately, our state’s civil asset forfeiture laws violate the spirit of these rights. Civil asset forfeiture disregards the Fourth Amendment protection from unreasonable search and seizure, while also not providing true due process protections that are guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment. According to a recent study, for the first time in history, law enforcement has taken more personal property than thieves. Something must be done to protect our most fundamental rights.
I look forward to working with my colleagues to reaffirm our commitment to the Constitution and the blessings of liberty it bestows on our citizens.”
