Senator George Burns Named Nuclear State Champion

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. George Burns, R-Pollard, was recently recognized as a Nuclear State Champion by Nuclear Matters, a branch of the Nuclear Energy Institute. Burns was selected for his leadership and commitment to advancing nuclear energy in Oklahoma.

The designation honors a select group of state leaders across the country who have demonstrated exceptional vision and dedication to strengthening America’s energy future through nuclear power.

“Nuclear energy is another tool in the energy toolbox that can provide reliable, affordable, and clean power to our communities,” Burns said. “I’m honored to be recognized as a Nuclear State Champion and will continue working to ensure Oklahoma pursues innovative energy solutions that benefit our economy and strengthen our energy security.”

Sen. Burns joins policymakers committed to advancing nuclear energy’s role in meeting growing energy demands while reducing emissions. Nuclear Matters will highlight Burns’ work through national outreach with energy stakeholders, advocates, and members of the inaugural class of 2026 Nuclear State Champions.

Burns authored legislation in 2025 related to nuclear energy, which the governor later signed into law. Senate Bill 130 directed the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to commission a comprehensive feasibility study on nuclear energy generation in the state.
