OKLAHOMA CITY – State Senator Dusty Deevers, R-Elgin, released the following statement Tuesday regarding the tragic collision involving a school bus and a semi-truck on I-44 near Medicine Park.
“Our hearts are heavy this morning as we process the news of the horrific accident that occurred last night involving Elgin students and other members of the community. There is no greater weight on a community than a threat to the safety of our children.
“I ask Oklahomans to join me in fervent prayer, first and foremost for the three children who have been hospitalized. We pray for the healing hand of the Lord to be upon all those injured and to be with all medical staff, as well as for the comfort of the Holy Spirit to be with the families waiting for news.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the bus driver and Elgin coach and teacher, Kevin McDonald, for his swift and bold action in the midst of chaos to control the bus and limit the tragedy. I also want to thank the first responders, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the medical teams who worked tirelessly at the scene and later at the hospital.
“I also want to highlight the heroic actions of Elgin students Leon Anderson and Clayton Rowell, who, despite their own injuries, selflessly helped younger students out of harm’s way and identified to first responders the children who were more seriously injured. I am proud of these young men for stepping up in such dangerous circumstances.
“In the coming days and weeks, it is vital that we surround these families with prayer and support. I urge our neighbors, churches, and local organizations to reach out and provide practical help and emotional grace. Now is the time for us to prove the strength of the bonds of the Elgin community by lifting one another up.
“My office is in close contact with local officials and school leadership. Please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can do for anyone affected. I will also be keeping a close eye on the results of OHP’s investigation into the cause of the crash.”
Melissa Evon, the 2025 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year from Elgin High School, similarly said: “My prayers are with the entire Elgin community as we seek healing and peace for the students, families, and staff affected by yesterday’s bus accident. I’m thankful for bus driver Kevin McDonald, the courageous students, and first responders whose swift, selfless actions provided critical assistance.”
