Senator Alvord Raises Awareness of Oklahoma Anti-Telemarketer Consumer Registry

OKLAHOMA CITY—Following an increase in telemarketing scam calls, Senator Jerry Alvord, R-Wilson, seeks to raise awareness that Oklahoma has an anti-Telemarketer Consumer Registry available to Oklahomans who do not wish to receive unsolicited calls.

The registry was founded under the Oklahoma Telemarketer Restriction Act in 2002, which prohibits telemarketers from contacting Oklahomans who have joined the “Do Not Call” list.

Alvord encouraged Oklahomans to join the state’s registry and remain vigilant against telemarketers, noting that scammers and impersonators continue to utilize advanced technology to misrepresent businesses or government agencies through telephone communications.

“Telemarketers continue to find new ways to attempt to take advantage of vulnerable Oklahomans,” Alvord said. “We have seen an increase in telephone scams misrepresenting government entities and law enforcement agencies, warranting cause for greater concern. Fraudulent telemarketers continue to financially abuse and exploit those they are calling and repeatedly attempt to gain access to their personal information.”

The Legislature has continued to implement protections for Oklahomans, including through the implementation of the Oklahoma Telephone Solicitation Act in 2022, which prohibits commercial telephone sales calls from using automated systems without the called party’s prior express written consent.

“By joining the Do Not Call list, and encouraging our neighbors to do the same, we can all do our part to protect Oklahomans from falling victim to telemarketing scams,” Alvord added.

Oklahomans can register for the Consumer Registry here.

Following a registration, telemarketers have 30 days to remove registered numbers from their list. Those listed on the registry may still receive calls from groups that have exceptions, such as churches, political candidates or causes, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, or other approved callers.
