Senate unanimously approves Stanley’s bill removing deadline to qualify for veterans sales tax exemption

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Bill 1215 was unanimously approved by the Senate Tuesday. The measure, authored by Sen. Brenda Stanley, R-Midwest City, removes the deadline for 100% disabled veterans to submit their information to the Oklahoma Veterans Registry in order to receive a sales tax exemption.

“Many Oklahoma veterans have not been able to qualify for the sales tax exemption they’re entitled to because they missed the cutoff to enroll in the veterans registry,” Stanley said. “The requirements put in place were never intended to result in permanent disqualification if not met. The last thing we want is for our veterans to miss out on the benefits they’ve rightfully earned, so my legislation removes this deadline without impacting the registry.”

The Oklahoma Veterans Registry was created in 2017 to identify veterans across the state and inform them about available programs and benefits, as well as reduce fraud and wasteful spending. Under the current law, veterans or their surviving spouses who were awarded the sales tax exemption before November 1, 2021, were required to register for the Oklahoma Veterans Registry before July 1, 2023, to keep their tax-exempt status.

SB 1215 now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
