The State Senate on Wednesday paused for a moment of silence in honor of a Poteau, Oklahoma Army National Guardsmen who was killed in Afghanistan on Monday.
Sgt. Buddy Hughie, 25, was killed while attempting to deliver medical supplies to fallen soldiers. Hughie and his unit were working in a joint mission with the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division and the Afghan National Army.
Sen. Kenneth Corn of Poteau praised Hughie for his heroism and devotion to his duty.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for the community and the state, but also a time to admire a soldier whose dedication to the Army and his duties was unrivaled,” said Corn, D-Poteau. “Hughie took great pride in serving his country and we honor his efforts.”
Hughie had been deployed to Afghanistan in 2002, but chose to return and serve again. Hughie’s unit was hit by enemy fire returning from a mission, Hughie was shot and killed while delivering medical supplies to two fallen Afghan Army soldiers.
“My heart goes out to Sgt. Hughie’s family and my prayers are with them,” Corn said. “His contribution and sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
