Senate, House Leaders Say Lawmakers Will Return After Memorial Day

Senate President Pro Tempore Cal Hobson and House Speaker Larry Adair announced Tuesday that lawmakers will return after the Memorial Day holiday weekend to complete the work of the First Session of the 49th Oklahoma Legislature.

Sine die adjournment will come sometime after Tuesday, May 27.

“We have important work that still must be completed and while we had hoped to adjourn this Friday, it would not be appropriate for us to rush to complete the state budget or deal with other substantive issues in a hurry just so we can start our summer vacation a few days earlier,” said Hobson, D-Lexington.

“Returning next week is the prudent thing to do. Our work is not complete. We need to finish the job the people of Oklahoma elected us to do,” said Adair, D-Stilwell.

Most weeks throughout the legislative session, lawmakers work Monday through Thursday, allowing them to spend Friday in their home districts to meet with constituents.

Hobson and Adair said that for the second straight week – as is often the case in late May – both the House and Senate will work Friday, May 23.

Lawmakers will then take off Monday for Memorial Day, May 26, and return to the Capitol Tuesday, May 27, working to adjourn as soon as their work is complete or by the constitutionally mandated deadline of 5 p.m. Friday, May 30.
