Senate Democratic Leader Kirt condemns executive order targeting Oklahoma Muslims

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt issued the following statement after the governor issued an executive order calling for an investigation into the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as well as another organization, the Muslim Brotherhood, to determine if they have terrorist ties.

“The governor’s order was issued without any proof. What we do know is that CAIR works to protect the civil rights of Oklahoma Muslims in the face of ongoing profiling and discrimination. These are our friends, neighbors, co-workers and fellow citizens. It’s causing tremendous concern among the Muslim families I represent, and those living in other legislative districts throughout Oklahoma.

“This kind of fear mongering and scapegoating divides our communities and state, and doesn’t solve any real problems Oklahomans are facing. I’m deeply concerned this further increases the likelihood of hate crimes against our neighbors, which is already on the rise in this country.” – Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt, D-Oklahoma City.
