Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt named 2026 Women of Impact honoree

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt has been recognized by the United Nations Association of Oklahoma City (UNA-OKC) as a 2026 Women of Impact honoree. The UNA-OKC chapter is dedicated to educating, inspiring and mobilizing Americans to support the principles of the United Nations, namely to secure and advance the fundamental rights of all people.

Kirt, D-Oklahoma City, was nominated for the Women of Impact award by UNA-OKC member Hilda De Leon Xavier.

“Julia Kirt’s work has expanded opportunities for women and girls, strengthened community support networks, and influenced policies that promote equity, access, and representation, creating lasting positive change for individuals and communities across Oklahoma,” De Leon Xavier said. “Through advocacy, mentorship, and policy initiatives, she advances education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, supporting the United Nations’ goals of gender equality, social inclusion, and human development.”

Before being elected to the Oklahoma Senate, Kirt spent nearly two decades leading nonprofit arts and culture organizations in the state, earning recognitions such as the Governor’s Arts Award for her contributions. In the Legislature, she advocates for strong public schools, great jobs, mental health access, affordable housing, and disability rights. Elected as the Senate Minority Leader in 2024, Kirt holds a bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in Minnesota and a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award from the United Nations Association of Oklahoma City. We need more Oklahomans coming together like this to fight for equality, dignity and opportunity for all,” Kirt said. “Thank you to UNA-OKC for this honor. I am hopeful about the work we can do together.”
