Senate Democratic Caucus leadership change takes effect Wednesday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Democratic Leader Kay Floyd, who has led her caucus for the past six years, announced Sen. Julia Kirt, D-Oklahoma City, will officially begin her role as leader on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Additionally, Sen. Michael Brooks, D-Oklahoma City, will officially succeed Sen. Kevin Matthews, D-Tulsa, as caucus chair. Both Floyd and Matthews have completed their final terms in the Senate due to term limits.

“On behalf of Senator Matthews and myself, we are grateful for the opportunity we had to serve the Senate Democratic Caucus, our districts, and the people of Oklahoma,” said Floyd, D-Oklahoma City. “We have the greatest confidence in the leadership skills and experience of Senators Kirt and Brooks, and wish all of our newly elected and returning members the very best as they prepare for the 60th Legislature.”

New and returning members of the Oklahoma Senate will officially be sworn into office during a ceremony in the Senate Gallery at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The ceremony will be livestreamed on the Senate website at https://oksenate.gov/live-chamber.
