Senate approves resolution celebrating Black History Month

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Nikki Nice, D-Oklahoma City, and Sen. Regina Goodwin, D-Tulsa, passed Senate Resolution 29 on Thursday, a measure recognizing and celebrating Black History Month in the State of Oklahoma.

Nice said the celebration of the contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans actually began in 1926 as a week-long celebration credited to historian and author Carter G. Woodson. Then called Negro History Week, the event eventually became Black History Month and was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1976.

“Black history is Oklahoma history, so it is very appropriate for the Senate to join in the celebration of Black Oklahomans who have persevered and become revered leaders in public service, education, science, business, the arts, and more,” Nice said. “I’m grateful to the Senate for supporting this resolution and acknowledging those accomplishments during Black History Month.”

The resolution celebrated the accomplishments of the first Black men and women to be elected to the Oklahoma Legislature and other offices, the establishment of Langston University and the creation of 50 all
Black communities in Indian and Oklahoma Territories, 13 of which remain. SR 29 also recognized the role of Black Oklahomans in the Civil Rights Movement and highlighted the outstanding careers and contributions of Black Oklahomans.

The Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus also held Black Heritage Day at the Capitol on Thursday, with speakers, performances and local vendors.

“Black history is American History, filled with accomplishments, tragedies, and triumphs. Contributions of Black people represent the best and brightest of America, and we appreciate the Senate for amplifying our shared history,” Goodwin said.
