Legislation to give liability protection to volunteers who provide transportation services for charitable organizations or not-for-profit corporations was approved by the full Senate on Monday. Sen. Debbe Leftwich is the author of SB 113. She said the measure was recommended by the Oklahoma County Senior Summit, a biannual conference to discuss issues important to seniors.
“SB 113 will give liability protection to volunteers who provide transportation for older citizens to senior nutrition centers, the doctor’s office and other vital services,” Leftwich said. “Without these volunteers, many seniors would not be able to take advantage of these critical programs.”
Leftwich said she’d worked on the legislation with Oklahoma County Commissioner Jim Roth.
“In Oklahoma County alone, we have about 100,000 citizens over the age of 65. Twelve percent are living below the poverty level and another 28 percent are close to it. That means they’re very dependent upon these volunteers for transportation to nutrition centers and for medical appointments,” Leftwich said. “The job they do helps our seniors stay independent longer, and that is not only good for those older citizens, it also keeps costs down for all taxpayers. By ensuring these services can continue, we are helping the entire state.”
The measure now moves to the House for assignment to a committee and further consideration.
