Senate advances measure creating Oklahoma Blue Heart Medal of Honor

Legislation that would create the Oklahoma Blue Heart Medal of Honor was approved today by the full Senate. The honor would be awarded to members of the military who voluntarily perform a deed of bravery or self-sacrifice during combat occurring after Sept. 11, 2001, resulting in their death.

Sen. Dan Newberry, author of Senate Bill 1814, said the proposal was a gesture of appreciation for our soldiers.

“It is important for all Americans to remember the men and women who have fought and risked their lives to protect and promote freedom,” said Newberry, R-Tulsa. “They may not expect special attention, or accolades in their honor, but for most of us, this is the best way we can show our gratitude. The Oklahoma Blue Heart Medal of Honor is another way we can display our appreciation for the men and women fighting on our behalf.”

The medal will be given to members of the military born in Oklahoma and who lose their lives in the line of duty or in a combat zone.

“The men and women of our military are heroes in every sense of the word, and they deserve to be honored and remembered,” Newberry said. “They bravely risk their lives to preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day. I’m honored to have been able to present the measure, and I look forward to seeing it signed into law.”

SB 1814 now advances to the Governor’s desk.
