Thousands of Oklahoma drivers would be eligible for a tax rebate on turnpike tolls under legislation proposed by Senator James A. Williamson for the 2006 session. Williamson, R-Tulsa, said the rebate would be available to drivers of passenger vehicles who file tax returns with the State of Oklahoma.
“Over the years I’ve heard from countless Oklahomans who thought that eventually the turnpikes would be paid off and they would become free roads. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened and probably won’t because of the expansion of the turnpike system,” Williamson said. “Offering a rebate to Oklahoma turnpike users would be the next best thing to eliminating the tolls.”
If approved, the Oklahomans would be able to apply for the rebate beginning in 2007. The legislation also contains a provision which would allow taxpayers to donate a portion of their rebate or the entire amount to the State Highway Construction and Maintenance Fund.
“The turnpikes would still have revenue from out-of-state and commercial vehicles which will pay for the bonds and other obligations related to the turnpikes. It seems unlikely we’ll ever see the tolls completely eliminated, but I think my bill represents an excellent alternative for Oklahoma drivers.”
