Sen. Weaver Secures Committee Approval for Uniform Child Abduction Prevention Act

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 79 Wednesday. The measure by Sen. Darrell Weaver, R-Moore, creates the Uniform Child Abduction Prevention Act, which authorizes a court to order abduction prevention measures in a child custody proceeding if the court finds that the evidence establishes a credible risk of abduction of the child.

“This bill empowers our courts to take proactive steps to protect children when there is credible evidence of a potential abduction risk,” Weaver said. “By creating the Uniform Child Abduction Prevention Act, we are setting clear and uniform guidelines for courts to follow, focusing on critical risk factors and ensuring swift action when necessary to protect vulnerable children from harm. I look forward to continuing to work on this critical bill as it advances through the legislative process.”

Weaver added that this legislation was brought forth by the Uniform Law Commission, which is comprised of practicing lawyers, judges, legislators, and others who have been appointed by their state to research, draft, and promote uniform state laws in areas where uniformity is practical.

Senate Bill 79 is now eligible for consideration by the full Senate.
