Sen. Rosino Advances Measure to Bolster Oklahoma’s Space Industry

OKLAHOMA CITY- The Oklahoma Legislature has officially approved Senate Bill 912, authored by Sen. Paul Rosino, R-Oklahoma City, marking a major step forward in the state’s efforts to position itself as a national leader in the space industry.

Senator Rosino pointed to the importance of the bill as aerospace and defense is the second largest and fastest growing industry in Oklahoma.

“Oklahoma is already a hub of aerospace innovation, and when coupled with our strong workforce, untapped infrastructure, and growing industry presence, our state is poised for significant growth and long-term success in the space industry,” Rosino said. “This bill will provide the framework necessary to drive future advancements and investments in the space sector. By taking proactive steps, this measure aims to get in front of the efforts to develop this industry and make Oklahoma a leader in this emerging opportunity.”

Senate Bill 912 merges the responsibilities of the Oklahoma Space Industry Development Authority (OSIDA) within the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) while also ensuring the long-term viability and authorities of OSIDA to support the statewide mission of space industry growth.  The measure restructures the OSDIA board by giving the existing Oklahoma Aerospace and Aeronautics Commission members the responsibilities of governing OSIDA by making them board members, better aligning OSIDA with the evolving needs of the state’s space industry.

Additionally, SB 912 modifies the number of members on the Oklahoma Aerospace and Aeronautics Commission from seven to nine members, with one appointment from the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the other from the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Our partners at ODAA have been a driving force behind our state’s success in aerospace development. By applying the same proven strategies and expertise to the growing space sector, we can build on that success and bolster our economy, create high-quality jobs, and drive innovation within the space industry,” Rosino added.

Rep. Nick Archer, R-Elk City, is the House author of SB 912.

“SB912 is a forward-looking measure that strengthens Oklahoma’s position in the space economy by placing OSIDA under the experienced leadership of ODAA. This alignment preserves OSIDA’s mission of space development and commerce while ensuring its facilities are properly maintained and strategically managed. It’s a win not just for Burns Flat and my district, but for the entire state’s future in aerospace. I’m proud to partner with Senator Rosino on this effort and hopeful the governor will soon sign it into law,” Archer said.

Senate Bill 912 now heads to the governor’s desk.
