Sen. Nice’s zoning measure sent to House

OKLAHOMA CITY – After winning unanimous Senate approval, the House is the next stop for legislation to streamline government for residents whose neighborhoods are within the metro’s Capitol-Medical Center Improvement and Zoning District. Sen. Nikki Nice, author of Senate Bill 717, said it was an issue she became aware of when she was a member of the Oklahoma City Council.

“What I found as a council member is that our communities within this district, which was formed in the late 1970s, have to use a state-appointed body in order for them to have code enforcement and address other issues in their neighborhoods. I wanted to make sure they could work through their municipal government and their council representative to help them address local issues,” said Nice, D-Oklahoma City. “SB 717 will accomplish that, modernizing the process and making government more efficient.”

SB 717 is Nice’s first to be approved by the full Senate, and she said she was grateful for the unanimous support by her fellow members. Rep. Jason Lowe, D-Oklahoma City, is the House principal author of the legislation.
