Sen. Nice honored for public service, pursuit of justice

OKLAHOMA CITY –Oklahoma Senator Nikki Nice has been honored for being a champion for her community, receiving the Ballot or the Bullet Award, an honor memorializing human rights activist Malcolm X. The recently held X-Factor Awards were presented during X-Fest, OKC, which coincided with the centennial of his birth.

The award is named after one of Malcom X’s most famous speeches, delivered in 1964, urging Black Americans to strategically exercise their right to vote, saying “A ballot is like a bullet. You don’t throw your ballots until you see a target, and if that target is not within your reach, keep your ballot in your pocket.”

The organization cited Nice’s advocacy on behalf of Julius Jones, as well as her work on behalf of marginalized people at City Hall, the state Capitol and through her involvement in numerous other organizations.

“The struggle for freedom, justice, and equality is just as critical today as it was in the past,” said Nice, D-Oklahoma City. “I am humbled by this honor, but I am also strengthened and uplifted by it. I continue to urge our friends and neighbors in my own community and throughout Oklahoma to use their voices at the ballot box and stay politically engaged. It is our legacy, and it is our right.”

Nice was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 2024, representing northeast Oklahoma City, as well as the communities of Forest Park, Nicoma Park, and Spencer. Prior to her service in the Legislature, she represented Ward 7 of Oklahoma City and was only the tenth woman and the second woman of color to serve at City Hall since Oklahoma City was incorporated in 1890. While on the City Council, she championed the reestablishment of the Human Rights Commission of Oklahoma City. Nice received her bachelor’s degree from Langston University and recently completed a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in regional and city planning.
