State Sen. Mike Mazzei has contacted Broken Arrow Mayor Mike Lester and members of the City Council to voice his opposition to a casino under construction in the Tulsa suburb. The Kialegee Tribal Town, based in Wetumka, plans to open the casino on leased land that is part of a Creek Nation allotment.
Last Thursday, several hundred Broken Arrow residents protested the casino fearing it will lead to higher crime rates. Mazzei said the development has raised numerous red flags, and called on city leaders to do everything in their power to stop the casino from being completed.
“People in Broken Arrow are worried about how this will negatively impact their community, and I share those concerns,” said Mazzei, R-Tulsa. “Beyond that, it has been reported the casino does not have the approval at the Federal level required by law and is opposed by the Creek Nation as well. There are several valid reasons this project should be stopped.”
The Broken Arrow City Council has a meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
“I share the many concerns raised by residents and other officials who believe the casino would be bad for the community. I’m willing to do anything I can to keep this project from advancing, and I hope the members of the Council and Mayor Lester will join us in this cause,” Mazzei said.
