Sen. Leewright takes on new leadership post for 58th Legislature

State Sen. James Leewright, R-Bristow, has been tapped for a new leadership post for the next two years.  During an organizational day held Tuesday at the state Capitol, it was formally announced that Leewright would serve as assistant majority floor leader for the 58th Legislature.

As assistant leader, he will assist Sen. Kim David, R-Porter, the majority floor leader.

“The floor leader actually has a huge role in the day-to-day operations of the Senate,” Leewright said.  “The responsibilities include determining what committee each bill will be assigned to for consideration.  Of those bills that are approved by committee, the floor leader then determines when they are to be heard by the full Senate, and then keeps the Senate on track as they move through each day’s agenda.  As assistant majority leader, I will be there to support and assist the majority leader to keep the process moving in an orderly, efficient way.”

Leewright also serves as the chair of the Senate Business, Commerce and Tourism Committee.  In addition, Leewright serves on the Senate Agriculture and Wildlife Committee, Judiciary, Rules, and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Select Agencies.

“I want to thank both President Pro Tempore Greg Treat and Majority Leader David for their confidence in my leadership abilities, and for the opportunity to be of even greater service to my fellow members, my district and to the state of Oklahoma,” Leewright said.

The 2021 legislative session will convene on Feb. 1.
