The Senate on Monday unanimously approved a measure intended to make Oklahoma schools some of the nations safest.
SB 1941, the Oklahoma School Security Act, includes numerous provisions to secure school facilities, reduce school violence and bullying and involve school administrators in making their schools safer places for students and staff. Sen. Todd Lamb, author of the bill, said he was pleased the Senate approved a measure that could help combat the growing problem of school violence.
“We have a responsibility to the people of this state to ensure that our schools are safe and secure places for our children and educators,” said Lamb, R-Edmond. “Parents should never have to worry about sending their children to schools that aren’t adequately prepared to prevent threats. Passage of this bill is an important step toward making our schools some of the nation’s safest, which should be among the first priorities of the Legislature.”
Lamb said SB 1941 would allow school administrators to prohibit the use of schools as polling places. The measure would also require schools to practice lockdowns three times each year. Under current law, schools are required to practice lockdowns just once annually.
