OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Carri Hicks has won unanimous approval from the Senate’s Retirement and Government Resources Committee for legislation to encourage greater use of American-made products, including iron, steel, and aluminum. Senate Bill 168, “Buy American,” would require all government entities in the state to purchase goods or equipment manufactured or produced in the United States for construction, repair, and renovation projects.
“I’m proud of this effort to support American jobs and American businesses,” said Hicks, D-Oklahoma City. My legislation would give American companies and workers the first shot at providing the goods and equipment needed as our state, counties, cities, and school districts invest in critical infrastructure.”
SB 168 would apply to any contract for the construction, reconstruction, repair or maintenance of a public building or public work with an estimated contract price exceeding $100,000. All materials to be used in the completion of that project must be manufactured or produced in the United States. Hicks said there would be exceptions to address concerns such as product availability and significant cost differences.
“I want to express my thanks to the committee members for their approval. I’ve been working on this legislation since 2024, and I’m really excited to move SB 168 forward,” Hicks said. “This is a measure I urge all my fellow senators to support on behalf of American manufacturing companies and their workers.”
