Sen. Goodwin, Sen. Nice comment on Supreme Court ruling’s damage to the Voting Rights Act

OKLAHOMA CITY – State Sen. Regina Goodwin, D-Tulsa, and Sen. Nikki Nice, D-Oklahoma City, issued the following comments in reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down majority-minority House districts aimed at ensuring representation for minorities.

“I was born in a time when Black people fought and died for the right to vote. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 sought to protect our vote. The U.S. Supreme Court’s 2026 destruction of this act further magnifies the racist agenda eroding fair political representation.”– Sen. Regina Goodwin, D-Tulsa.

“As someone who has served in both local and state office, I understand the importance of representation and preserving majority-minority districts. This decision erodes the work of Senator E. Melvin Porter, Clara Luper, and other Civil Rights leaders who fought for our Black communities to have a seat at the political table. We cannot afford to continue standing on the sidelines when our democracy is under siege.” – Sen. Nikki Nice, D-Oklahoma City.
