Sen. George Young comments on his decision to vote remotely as the Second Session of the 57th Legislature reconvenes at the Capitol

State Sen. George Young, D-Oklahoma City, released the following statement on Monday regarding his decision to remain home and vote remotely while the Senate convenes in session.

“I have made the decision not to attend in-person proceedings as the Second Session of the 57th Legislature reconvenes at the Capitol this week. I greatly appreciate that President Pro Tempore Greg Treat has made special arrangements for those who cannot attend session in-person to participate and vote remotely from the safety of our homes. Thankfully, following the Safer at Home order has not exempted me from being involved in the legislative process—I will still be able to ask questions and vote remotely.

“I am considered a part of the vulnerable population due to my age, and it was not a tough decision to attend remotely. The public is allowed access to the Capitol, which I believe is the right thing to do. However, the danger of infection is elevated by this decision. Although everyone’s temperature is being checked before entering the building, I’ve also been informed that some people in the building may not be wearing masks. There are medical personnel from the OU Health Sciences Center present, but I feel the risk for myself is too great.

“I’m glad I’m still able to represent District 48 while protecting the health of myself and others. As I continue to observe the effects of COVID-19 data and trends, it is clear that we are still in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. I continue to work to secure testing sites for mobile testing vans and will release that information as it is available.

“In the meantime, I am available to my constituents via email, telephone and social media. Please continue to reach out if there is anything I can assist you with at this time.”
