Sen. Dossett to study voluntary safe gun storage in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Jo Anna Dossett, D-Tulsa, announces her interim study in Senate Public Safety Committee exploring the feasibility of voluntary safe gun storage partnerships in Oklahoma.

“Voluntary safe gun storage in an out-of-home setting is a useful option in a variety of situations such as navigating personal crises, going through transitions such as divorce, military deployment, or moving homes, or even something as simple as young grandchildren coming to stay overnight,” Dossett said. “Expert testimony during the study will show us where this practice is working in the U.S. and where it isn’t, and how to increase participation in Oklahoma.”

Among other national experts, Dossett has invited leaders from two non-profits, Hold My Guns and The Armory Project. Headquartered in Pennsylvania, Hold My Guns connects gun owners with Federal Firearms Licensees across the nation to provide voluntary gun storage. Based in Louisiana, The Armory Project operates there as well as in Florida, Arizona, Kansas, and Arkansas, with a special emphasis on connecting military members and veterans with temporary storage options during times of need.

The interim study will take place on Thursday, October 2 at 8:00 a.m. in room 230 at the state Capitol, and can be viewed online at oksenate.gov/live-chamber under Public Safety.
