Sen. David Holt (R - Oklahoma City) and Rep. Mike Sanders (R - Kingfisher) this morning dedicated the "President George W. Bush Bridge" with the former President himself in his office in Dallas, Texas. The legislators presented President Bush with a replica of the sign that was placed this past weekend at the southbound Interstate 44 Bridge over the Red River. The Oklahoma Legislature approved the naming in 2011.
"Oklahomans remain grateful for President Bush's courage, and we are glad that we had this opportunity to communicate that personally," said Sen. Holt.
"We were deeply honored to represent the people of Oklahoma today, and President Bush definitely appreciated it very much," said Rep. Sanders.
In 2011, Sen. Holt authored Senate Bill 304, for which Rep. Sanders served as the author in the Oklahoma House. The bill named the southbound Interstate 44 Bridge over the Red River the "President George W. Bush Bridge." The bill passed the Legislature with wide bipartisan support and was signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin on May 2, 2011.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation placed the sign this past weekend.
Sen. Holt served in the White House of President George W. Bush from 2002 to 2004 and coordinated the President's Oklahoma re-election efforts in
2004.
Rep. Sanders served President Bush during his 2000 campaign, then in the White House, and then finally in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
President George W. Bush won Oklahoma with over 60 percent of the vote in 2000, and won every one of Oklahoma's 77 counties in his 2004 re-election.
