Sen. Christi Gillespie Releases Statement on Broken Arrow City Council Denying Proposed Development

OKLAHOMA CITY — Senator Christi Gillespie, R–Broken Arrow, released the following statement after the Broken Arrow City Council voted 4-to-1, denying a proposed development at the Olive Avenue and Creek Turnpike corridor. 

“Last night’s decision reflects what many residents have been saying for years: the City of Broken Arrow must follow its Comprehensive Plan and protect long-term economic growth in our community.

“This proposal did not comply with the Comprehensive Plan’s clear designation of this corridor for commercial and employment-focused development, nor did it adequately address serious concerns related to infrastructure, traffic capacity, stormwater, and floodplain management.

“Speaking from my previous experience on the Broken Arrow City council, cities rely on thoughtful land-use planning to sustain public safety, infrastructure, and quality of life. Preserving key gateway areas for commercial development is essential to maintaining a strong sales tax base that funds those core services.

“I appreciate the City Council’s willingness to weigh these factors carefully and honor the intent of the Comprehensive Plan that residents helped shape.

“I also intend to meet with the Attorney General’s Office and am in agreement with the Attorney General’s decision to review the matter. Transparency, due process, and adherence to the law are essential, and I welcome that review.”

Gillespie previously served on the Broken Arrow City Council and currently represents much of Broken Arrow in the Oklahoma Senate, where she serves on the Economic Development, Workforce, and Tourism Committee.
