Rosino continues efforts to implement CERPs in all Oklahoma public schools

OKLAHOMA CITY- Sen. Paul Rosino, R-Oklahoma City, joined the American Heart Association, NFL Smart Heart Sports Coalition, and dozens of other organizations and individuals to advocate for the implementation of cardiac emergency response plans (CERPs) in all Oklahoma public schools. The “You’re the Cure” rally was held at the Capitol on Monday to raise awareness through guest speakers, informational booths, and hands-on CPR demonstrations.

“The sudden nature and severity of cardiac emergencies was brought to light when the nation watched Damar Hamlin collapse due to cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, there have been many similar instances in schools and athletic facilities across the state of Oklahoma,” Rosino said. “It is critical that when cardiac emergencies occur in our schools there is a plan in place to administer immediate lifesaving care. Every second counts.”

Rosino is the author of Senate Bill 1921, which requires all public schools across the state to formulate a sudden cardiac emergency response plan. Additionally, the legislation requires athletic coaches, school nurses, and athletic trainers to complete annual training focused on emergency cardiovascular care. The legislation has received overwhelming approval from both legislative chambers.

“This issue hits even closer to home as our community lost a young Oklahoman to a cardiac emergency earlier this year. Cardiac episodes can happen to anyone at any time, so we must continue to educate as many people as possible on the signs of cardiac arrest, in addition to proper CPR administration and AED use,” Rosino said. “I appreciate our partners at the American Heart Association and the number of others who continually advocate for further education and awareness across our state, especially in our educational facilities.”

Following the rally, Rosino met with NFL player Sterling Shepard and other advocates to promote CERPs.
