OKLAHOMA CITY – Senate Pro Tempore Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, today issued the following statement after President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the Oval Office in the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
In his address, President Trump condemned the act of political violence that claimed Kirk’s life, calling for unity and urging Americans to reject hatred and division. President Trump also ordered all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff in Kirk’s honor.
“The assassination of Charlie Kirk is horrific and heartbreaking,” Pro Tem Paxton said. “Civil discourse should always be welcome. Being murdered for your beliefs is not. Kirk himself said it best when he said – ‘What we as a culture have to get back to is being able to have a reasonable disagreement where violence is not an option’. Charlie was a tireless advocate for what he believed in and an inspiration to many. This is a senseless, unthinkable tragedy that has left his wife a widow and his children fatherless. I stand with my fellow Oklahomans and Americans, and many others, in condemning this violence and in calling on all Americans to unite against such evil. We must never allow hatred and violence to replace civility and respect for one another, no matter their viewpoint. My wife Misti and I join the millions of Americans in praying for Charlie’s family, friends and all those who loved him. May we honor his life by striving for a better and more peaceful future.”
