OKLAHOMA CITY – Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, today secured committee approval for legislation aimed at clarifying who has the authority to issue burn bans in Oklahoma counties.
Senate Bill 1550 authorizes boards of county commissioners, in consultation with the Oklahoma Secretary of Agriculture, to issue burn bans within their counties. The measure provides clarity in state law and allows for greater local control when wildfire conditions threaten public safety.
“Last year, when wildfires broke out in communities across Oklahoma, there was confusion over who had the authority to issue a burn ban,” Pro Tem Paxton said. “As a volunteer firefighter for 35 years, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly these situations can escalate if action isn’t taken in a timely manner. This legislation provides clarity and gives counties the flexibility they need to protect their communities when the state hasn’t acted.”
Senate Bill 1550 passed the Agriculture and Wildlife Committee unanimously.
