Senate President Pro Tempore Brian Bingman issued the following statement after Tuesday’s passage of SCR 33, a measure calling on Congress and the President to begin work on a balanced budget amendment and to reduce spending:
“It’s past time Washington politicians admit what Oklahomans have known all along—an endless cycle of borrowing and spending paves the road to destruction, not the path to prosperity,” said Bingman, R-Sapulpa. “Out of control spending in Washington is bankrupting the country. Nobody in their right mind thinks our staggering $15 trillion debt is sustainable. We need a Balanced Budget Amendment and we need it now.
“Even President Obama and Democrat leaders in Congress say we’re in serious danger, only to respond by raising the debt ceiling time and again or by printing more money. The cycle has to stop before it’s too late. Playing fast and loose with our children’s future is simply something we can no longer tolerate.
“Today, members of the Senate Republican caucus joined with Senator Newberry to send Washington a message, and I want to thank them for doing what’s right. Governor Fallin should also be commended for standing with us. Together, it’s our hope Washington will finally get a clue—stop the rhetoric, and let’s get serious about solving a problem that threatens the future of America’s greatness.”
