OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Ron Sharp recently received the 2017 Outstanding Rural Legislator Award from the Organization of Rural Oklahoma Schools for his tireless support of rural schools.
“I’m so honored to receive this special award. As a retired educator, I know the special challenges faced by our schools, especially those in rural Oklahoma,” said Sharp, R-Shawnee. “There is no greater impact we can have on our state and future than ensuring our children get the highest quality education possible. We must protect funding and make sure our teachers have the support and tools they need to do their jobs efficiently.”
Sharp taught at Shawnee Public Schools for 38 years and was named Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for 18 consecutive years. The Oklahoma Veterans of Foreign Wars named him the 2011 Teacher of the Year. Sharp also was named National High School Tennis Coach of the Year in 1979 and the All-American Tennis Coach in 1986. He currently serves at the Vice Chair of the Senate Education Committee
