The Democrats of the Oklahoma State Senate have chosen Sen. John Sparks as leader-elect of the Caucus. Sparks, of Norman, was elected during a meeting of the Senate Democratic Caucus on Monday. He will succeed Sen. Sean Burrage of Claremore, who is not seeking re-election to his seat. Sparks will take over from Burrage at the close of the current legislative session.
“Although I am sad that this position became open due to Sen. Burrage’s departure from the Senate, I am ready and willing to step forward and lead our Caucus,” Sparks said. “The Democratic Caucus provides contrast where it is needed; we ask the hard questions; we shine light on the dark spaces; and we hold the Republicans accountable. I look forward to working with my fellow Democrats as we continue our efforts to create opportunity and promise for hard-working Oklahomans and their families.”
“I look forward to working with Sen. Sparks on a smooth transition,” said Burrage. “I have known John for more than 20 years and I am sure he will be successful in his efforts to recruit candidates, raise money, get Democrats elected and advance an agenda that benefits everyday Oklahomans. Sen. Sparks is a loyal, hard-working and effective lawmaker. I know he is more than up to this task.”
