OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Carri Hicks, co-chair of the Legislative Diabetes Caucus, invites Oklahomans living with diabetes, their families, and all who are concerned about this disease to come to the state Capitol on Tuesday, April 14 for Diabetes Awareness Day. The annual event brings together individuals living with diabetes, their families, healthcare professionals, advocates, and community organizations for a day centered on connection, education, and awareness.
Hicks, whose son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 17 months old, said 13.2 percent of Oklahoma adults have diagnosed diabetes, which is higher than the national average. Diabetes is linked to heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and stroke. Diabetes Awareness Day shines a light on the many faces of the disease, highlighting personal stories, innovative advancements, and the ongoing needs of those navigating life with diabetes.
“This is an opportunity for those whose lives have been impacted by diabetes to come to the Capitol and learn more about the latest treatments, programs, and meet with legislators to advocate for themselves and their loved ones,” said Hicks, D-Oklahoma City.
The event will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the second floor Supreme Court hallway. At noon, guest speakers will offer insights into the evolving diabetes landscape, featuring respected voices from across the healthcare and advocacy space, including keynote speaker, Dr. Thomas Grace. A highly regarded physician and advocate in the diabetes community, Grace is known for his commitment to improving patient outcomes through compassionate care and innovation.
The event is free and open to the public, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend.
