Newberry: Daugherty’s Legacy of Service and Ministry Serves as an Example for all Oklahomans

Sen. Dan Newberry Sen. Dan Newberry

Sen. Dan Newberry on Monday commented on the passing of Pastor Billy Joe Daugherty, pastor of Victory Christian Center and founder of Victory Christian School, Victory Bible Institute, the Tulsa Dream Center and Victory World Missions Training Center, saying his death was saddening, while commending the pastor on his extraordinary legacy of ministry and service. Newberry is an active member of Victory Christian Center.

Daugherty’s network of schools spans 93 countries, including 911 campuses. His Victory World Missions Training Center has sent hundreds of missionaries to locations all over the world, and the Tulsa Dream Center has provided clothing and other essentials to less fortunate Tulsans. Daugherty was named interim-president of Oral Roberts University in 2007. He passed away Sunday, after being hospitalized with lymphoma last month.

“He made an extraordinary impact in Tulsa, and Pastor Daugherty’s legacy of ministry and service stretches far beyond the borders of Oklahoma,” said Newberry, R-Tulsa. “His efforts have bettered the lives of people the world over, and everyone who came to know him was better for it. He leaves behind a legacy that we should all aspire to.”

Daugherty presided over a congregation of 17,000 at Victory Christian Center. His television show, Victory in Jesus, reached an audience of more than 100 million, not including worldwide satellite distribution. Newberry said he was a great man of God and a great Oklahoman.

“He was a man we should all admire and learn from – he was a dedicated family man, a gifted leader and a tireless spokesman for the gospel,” Newberry said. “His affection for both God and his fellow man was infectious, and his passion for the gospel an inspiration. He will be greatly missed.”
