Montgomery takes oath, begins first Senate term

John Montgomery is now officially on the job as State Senator for District 32.  The Lawton Republican was sworn in during a ceremony at the Capitol on Wednesday as friends, family and other supporters watched from the Senate Gallery.

“I’m grateful and humbled by the citizens of District 32 for entrusting me to continue being their voice at the state Capitol,” Montgomery said.  “I’m looking forward to promoting legislation to expand our economy, create more quality jobs, improve our schools, protect our values and invest more in our vital state services.”

Montgomery was born and raised in Lawton and graduated from Eisenhower High School.  He began college at Cameron University where he became involved in ROTC and student government.  He then transferred to the University of Oklahoma receiving a bachelor’s in International Studies.  While in college, he studied abroad in Brazil and studied Russian for two years.

He went on to work at Northwest Mutual and the governor’s office before getting elected to the House of Representatives in 2014.  While in the House, he served as the Vice Chair of the Appropriations and Budget Finance Committee as well as a member of the Banking and Business, Financial Services and Pensions, Judiciary – Criminal Justice and Corrections, and Utilities Committees.

Senate President Pro Tempore Designate Greg Treat said he was looking forward to working with Montgomery.

“Senator Montgomery represents the core values that make Oklahoma great.  His former legislative experience will be a tremendous asset to our caucus.   I know Senator Montgomery will be a strong voice on behalf of District 32 in the State Senate,” said Treat, R-Oklahoma City.

The Senate will hold a one day organizational meeting on January 8, and the 2019 session will formally get underway on February 4.
