Michael Brooks takes oath of office for District 44 Senate Seat

Sen. Michael Brooks was sworn in as the newest member of the Oklahoma State Senate on Tuesday, during a ceremony in the Senate Chamber of the Capitol.  Brooks, a lifelong southwest Oklahoma City resident, small business owner and attorney, won the Senate District 44 seat in a special election held July 11.

"Oklahomans know we deserve better than four-day school weeks, underpaid teachers, budget shortfalls, and crumbling infrastructure," said Brooks, D-Oklahoma City. "From today forward, I will work diligently to find solutions to our state's problems. I look forward to serving all Oklahomans, regardless of political affiliation. Together, we can build the Oklahoma we know in our hearts we can become.”

Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb, president of the Senate, presided over the ceremony and the oath of office was administered by Oklahoma State Supreme Court Chief Justice Douglas Combs.

During the ceremony, Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Schulz, R-Altus, and Senate Democratic Leader John Sparks, D-Norman, presented Brooks with his Certificate of Election and a Senate lapel pin.  Sparks said he was happy to welcome Brooks to the Oklahoma Legislature.

“Michael grew up in southwest Oklahoma City and was involved in his community long before being elected to the Senate,” Sparks said.  “I know he will do an excellent job serving the people of District 44 with honor and distinction.”

Brooks earned his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University and then earned his juris doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College Of Law.

He and his wife Jessica are the parents of Joaquin and Lucy Brooks.  The family attends St. James Catholic Church in southwest Oklahoma City.
