Democratic Senator Daisy Lawler called on House leaders today to pass House Bill 1686, the historic pro-life measure that passed off the Senate floor more than a week ago.
“I am not sure what the hold up is in the House,” Lawler, a Democrat from Comanche said. “This bill could already be sitting on the Governors desk awaiting his signature if the House would simply allow the bill to be heard.”
Lawler, who helped craft the bill in the Senate along with Senator Kenneth Corn, (D-Poteau) pointed out the bill passed the Senate with bi-partisan support without a single no vote by Senate Republicans. She also said the measure has received praise from Oklahomans for Life Chairman, Tony Lauinger.
“Senate Republican James Williamson said this bill was a good bill for the women of Oklahoma and would protect innocent lives,” Lawler said. “House leadership should listen to members of their own party and pass this bill.”
The Senator said it seems as if House leaders are more interested in playing politics with the issue rather than protecting the lives of unborn Oklahomans. She said to show they are serious about the issue she challenged House leaders to allow the measure to have an up or down vote as soon as possible.
“For that bill to just sit over there for more than a week without any action is unacceptable,” Lawler said. “I would urge House Floor Leader Lance Cargill to bring this measure to the floor first thing Monday morning and get it to the Governor for his signature.”
