Just in Time for Independence Day, Senator Standridge Celebrates Norman Native’s Homecoming After Wrongful Detention in Thailand

OKLAHOMA CITY — Sen. Lisa Standridge, R-Norman, recently celebrated the homecoming of a Norman native who, up until recently, was wrongfully detained in Thailand.

This spring, University of Oklahoma graduate and distinguished academic Paul Chambers was wrongfully imprisoned and detained in Thailand after being falsely accused of insulting the country’s monarchy charges that were later dropped. This came after Chambers had spent decades living and working in Thailand as a professor and researcher.

Chambers’ visa and work permit were revoked, but he was allowed to leave the country about two months after he was arrested in April. He returned to the United States in June, reuniting with his family ahead of the Fourth of July.

“Paul’s story is chilling and serves as a poignant reminder of the freedoms we often take for granted here in America,” Standridge said. “His safe return would not have been possible without the unwavering determination of his mother, Peggy, and his brother, Kit. Their strength, love and perseverance brought him home. I was proud to stand with them as they fought for justice for Paul. I encourage everyone to reflect on Paul’s experience this July Fourth and thank God for the freedoms we enjoy in this country.”

Standridge attended a welcome home reception for Chambers on Friday, where she met him for the first time. Standridge and her office worked closely with Chambers’ mother and members of Oklahoma’s federal delegation to advocate and work for his rightful release.

When asked about his release and if he had a new perspective on Independence Day, Chambers said, “Having been released from false imprisonment abroad and returned home, I now find myself strongly aware of the freedoms inherent in America, which on Independence Day I strongly celebrate.”
